Innovative fabrics for better sleep
Design is more than just an aesthetic — it’s a language, a message, and a medium to spark imagination. In this project, the goal was to illustrate a cohesive, nontraditional approach to design, challenging conventional patterns and offering a refreshing perspective on Wool and lyocell fibre blends. This unique pattern speaks to creativity, fashion-forward thinking, and a deep appreciation for textiles.
Design
The inspiration for this design came from a desire to merge modern minimalism with the nostalgic charm of vintage patchwork. The result is a pattern that feels both contemporary and cozily familiar:
- Patchwork style: Echoes the warmth of a classic quilt but reimagined with minimalist, angular shapes.
- Colour palette: A balance of warm and cool neutrals chosen to complement the luxurious softness of TENCEL™ Lyocell and break away from the standard greys and blues of the mattress market.
This careful balance of modern and vintage elements brings a refreshing originality and comfort to bedroom textiles.
Fibres
The combination of Wool and TENCEL™ Lyocell was key to the fabric’s success, with each fibre enhancing the other’s qualities:
Wool benefits
Wool’s natural properties make it a standout choice for sleep-related textiles, offering benefits that directly enhance rest and relaxation:
- Wool fibres naturally insulate, keeping the body warm in colder environments and cool in warmer conditions.
- Prevents overheating, a common issue in synthetic or less breathable materials.
- Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp, helping to regulate humidity around the body during sleep.
- Keeps sleepers dry and comfortable throughout the night, even in humid conditions.
Wool’s porous structure allows for excellent airflow, reducing the risk of clammy or uncomfortable conditions in bed.
TENCEL™ Lyocell benefits
TENCEL™ Lyocell are derived from natural raw material wood and complements Wool’s benefits by introducing a layer of softness and enhanced functionality:
Naturally soft and smooth to the touch, TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres give fabrics a natural softness, making them feel pleasant against the skin.
The structure of TENCEL™ Lyocell allows for the absorption and release of moisture. In a final textile product, these effective moisture controlling properties support a drier microclimate on the skin, increasing the user’s thermal comfort.
TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres absorb sweat efficiently, resulting in reduced moisture on the fibre surface. This creates a less favourable environment for the growth of odour-causing bacteria.
Reflections and learnings
Every project offers opportunities to refine the process: In this case it would be developing a core colour palette for the yarn that could elevate the design further, offering premium tiered options and enhancing creative possibilities.
